However being able to win a dance competition consistently can be a hard feat for most people.

Having been a professional dancer for nearly a decade I have learnt a lot of key steps to be able to increase your chances of winning a competition.

In this article I will be walking you through how you can be able to win a dance competition.

1.Confidence is key

Having confidence is the number aspect of learning how to win a dance competition.

Without confidence your chances of even being visible on the dance floor is diminished drastically.

When I am talking about confidence I am talking about being confidence with your steps.

And being confidence with your dancing starts about you doing the right things and doing the right things comes from having invested in yourself which I will be talking about in the next section.

Confidence starts even before you get into the dance floor and it is what gives you an edge as a dancer.

Most people get into the dance floor already defeated mentally since their body language sells them off.

This is a recipe for failure as a dancer or any athlete for that matter.

2.Invest in yourself

The main reason so many dancers have no confidence in their dancing is because they haven't invested in their dancing.

What do I mean by investing in yourself. I basically mean you paying money to get dance lessons.

Let's face it dancing can be very expensive but what people fail to recognize is that if do not invest in themselves they will never be great dancers.

What will happen is that their dancing will be stagnant and it will not grow.

Trust me no one would like to be in a losing position but most people do not do this because they think they are wasting money which becomes their downfall.

I have never seen a top dancer in the world who doesn't develop themselves.

In fact they are always seeking to grow.

3.Master your mind

The most vital think most dancers forget is that if they do not control their mind they will damage their grow.

What I mean is who you hang around with will shape you into success of your dancing of failure.

The majority of people enjoy hanging around people who will not help them grow just because they are their friends.

Over the years I have seen all these people fail.

It is also the reason why I am always protecting my mindset.

4.Get a good mentor or coach

You would be amazed at how many dancers do not have a proper coach or mentor for their dancing (close to 90{14175b1f95d0f0faa387c4f6ed17908f179b141bfe6cf26d34224cd7cbf4f8b7}).

What I mean by the right coach is that a coach who has achieved what you are willing to achieve.

It is laughable to go with a dance coach who wants to make you into something he or she can't even do.

This is simple common sense which people fail to understand but then again it reminds me of the saying "common sense is not common"

When I talked about who beginners can become top dancers quickly I did mention this fact.

So this i not just for seasoned dancers but also for beginners.

Many people are rather scared when it comes to dancing ballroom dancing compared to other dance genres like Latin American, But if you are serious about how to learn ballroom dancing there are few things that can help you.

Most people do not know these steps because they are never told before they start dancing.

This leads to their whole ballroom dancing career being jeopardized.

In this article I will be walking you through how you can learn this beautiful skill by just adopting three rules.

Why is ballroom dancing hard?-why many people struggle

Before I get into the three rules for how to learn ballroom dancing let me address the issue as to why many dancers see ballroom as a hard genre to learn.

Ballroom dancing is a very different genre in the dancing world compared to all genres (hip hop, Latin, belly dancing, tap etc).

This is because in ballroom dancing you have to be dancing with a partner 100{14175b1f95d0f0faa387c4f6ed17908f179b141bfe6cf26d34224cd7cbf4f8b7} of the time and in that time you need to execute the best moves.

Now you can imagine how hard this can be especially if you have never done it before.

Well for me this is totally different.

I can hear you saying "yeah yeah you have so much experience and stuff.".

But what if I say this genere can be easy if you just focus on one thing?

I am sure you will be shocked. Well you can do that.

Let me tell you a secret.

You see most people struggle in ballroom because they think they have to match their partner and try be good together.

Well this is what you should never try to do as a ballroom dancer.

What you need to do as a ballroom dancer is to assume you are a single entity and that you need to execute your part (alone) fully.

By focusing on your individual aspect you will utterly develop the skills for your partner to follow you (male or female).

This is how you improve and become a great dancer. Most people always fail because they are waiting for their partner in order to practice.

This is what kills the ballroom dance performance.

Let me give you an example.

When I danced with a world champ (Edita Danuite) I was able to control her without having practiced the routine with her.

And how did I do this?

I used exactly what I just told you about. You see I was confident in my dancing because of lots of practice i had done alone over the years and that led me to control her well.

Rule 1-Focus on the music

By music Im not talking about being dancing on beat. I am talking about using musicality in your dancing to be different to everyone you are competing with.

...oh and also these days they are even judging the musicality by giving you points for it...so you see how important it is.

So what is musicality and how can you adopt it?

Musicality is you showing the audience and adjudicators that you can play around with the music while doing your routines.

Also by musicality I am not talking about choreography. Most people tend to mistake this idea.

So the more you learn to be creative with the music by either being fast and slow you show you are good.

But let me tell you that this may not be easy so you will need an expert coach to help you understand this.

I know it took me years

Rule 2-Simplicity and elegence

If you want to know how to learn ballroom dancing this one is key.

I can guarantee you that most amateur dancers struggle with this especially since dancing has evolved so much.

Most people nowadays are intrigued by crazy and athletic choreography. Yes they are good but they need to be done in a simplistic manner.

If you look at all the top ballroom dancers you will notice how the simplicity and elegance never goes away.

The likes of Mirko Gozzoli and Edita Danuite and Dmitry Zharvo and Olga, Victor Fong to name a few show this at a high level.

This is one of the reasons they do very well in competitions.

This concept I was told by Monica a former world champ, when we went to take lessons with him.

He ephasized that no matter what choreography you get we should stick to simplicity of our body dynamics.

Rule 3- Say good by to the adjudicators

So the last rule for being a great dancing is to not pay too much focus on the adjuicators upon performing or after the results.

This can make or break you. Why?

This is a psychological reason which we all tend to over look.

this is why it is vital to have goals as  dancer so you focus on the target.

When you dance you have done all you could at practice so going back to hit yourself will do you no good when you are at a competition.

I have been a victim of this until I learnt to calm my nerves and it has worked well for me.

So should dancers run as part of their fitness routine?

I have been asked this question a lot by my dancer students and followers overall.should dancers run

This is very interesting because I had a time when I did not know whether this running was good for me or not as a dancer.

After learning through trial and error and looking at what other top world dancers do I finally found the answer.

In this article I will be answering whether running is good for dancing and whether dancers should run for fitness.

Types of running

First and foremost to answer this question "should dancers run?" I would like to address one important fact that there are different types of running and each will determine whether it will be a good fit for dancers.

You see the type of running will determine whether dancers should run or not.

Let me highlight the general benefits of running below:

  • Gives you stamina
  • Build your leg muscles
  • Gives you stamina
  • Gives you overall health

Given all these benefits we can all see that running is a good activity to have in your fitness.

However if you do the wrong type of running as a dancer it can literally jeopardize your dancing career.

 

I have faced a similar problem myself in 2014 when I ran to try build my stamina but unfortunately it lead to me nearly not competing in a major competition.

This was because I neglected the fact that running can be harmful depending on the type you partake in.

You see in dancing you are generally on flexible floors which tends to be soft on the ankles and knees while in running it is exactly the opposite.

This is what leads to a lot of complications when you running.

I have since resorted to dance workouts instead and only do running on a small scale.

Having said that let's look at the types of running and their pros and cons for dancers.

Cross-country running (or similar)

So should dancers run the cross country or the outside long distance run?

Well let's see..

This type of running is very hard core and and requires a lot of muscles in your legs to be working.

Running also requires a lot of energy to be put back into your body since most of the time it leaves you exhausted and drained.

Pros

  • Gives stamina over time
  • Calf muscle strength

Cons

  • Hard on the knees and ankles
  • Weather dependent

Rating

  • 4/10

Treadmill running

This is another type of running, except it is indoors and on a machine.

This type of running I would highly recommend for dancers because it does not use to much of a hard floor.

This will help you escape from the harsh impacts you would get by regularly running outside.

Pros

  • Gives stamina over time
  • Generally soft on the knees and ankles
  • Can do it any time of the day
  • Weather independent

Cons

  • Can be electricity dependent

Rating

  • 9/10

Beach running

Here is another type of running I would personally recommend if you are looking to running to get stamina and calf muscle strength and development.

The best advice I can give you for running as a dancer is that you should always wear the best shoes.

This will help a lot in giving you comfort and better care of your knees and ankles.

I would recommend focusing on running shoes like Nike or Adidas.

Whenever you are engage in running or dancing make sure to fuel your body with the right foods.

It all depends on what type of running you want to do, bare in mind there are many times of running.

The subject of dance outfits is one of the things overlooked as a dancers, especially for beginners.

This is because most instructors focus on teaching their students the technical part of dancing and forget to help them with the dressing up.

Throughout my years of dancing I have also had the same unfortunate issue but luckily as I grow older I was introduced to the concept of knowing proper dance outfits  by top teachers.

In This article I will talk you through the most important aspects of dance outfits in ballroom dancing.

Type Shoes

First and foremost I would like to address the issue of proper dance shoes when it comes to choosing proper dance outfits.

I start with shoes because shoes will have a huge influence in terms of how you end up performing in a competition of at practice.

I always recommend to my students, especially beginners to stick to the basics when choosing dance shoes.

Not only while basic shoes making you feel comfortable but it will help you not get worried about being disqualified or something (hey no one likes that right!)

Nevertheless if you are looking for basic shoes the is a variety out there that you can have a look at.

I will mention a few for you here which I consider very good quality and which generally last for long.

For women

These dance shoes are usually for intermediate ballroom dancers (level 4 to Novice level).

These shoes have been in the market for a very long time and have done the work. Below are the pros and cons.

Types of dresses

Dresses are also a big part of the most important dance outfits that you can use.

This is because dresses add to the big picture of how you look as a dancer.

On my post of  "dancing for beginners" I talked about how dressing up can add it make you a top dancer.

Again on this post I will focus on the general types of dresses.

For beginner dancers it is vital too wear dresses which are very simple yet very bright and elegant.

Why do I say bright and elegant?

It all goes to back to the point of being prominent on the dance floor, YOU NEED TO BE VISIBLE ON THE DANCE FLOOR.

For beginners you can have seen done for you at your local dress maker as long as they use costume to make the dresses.

Below is an example of a type of beginner ballroom dress.

From the above picture you can see how simple the dress is and also you can see how basic the male wears: white shirt with black trousers.

Of course as you advance in your dancing you will need more elegant and fancy dresses like the one below, This is where you invest more into your dancing.

As you can see the man also tends to look more defined as he adds on a tail suit as he progresses in levels.

As far as dance outfits I have not included other extra items that can assist in giving you that great look.

This is because I have tried to stick to the more basic part of how a beginner and intermediate dancer can wear.

All forms of dance genres know the importance of taking the food you eat seriously with reference to progress.

However, most people do not know how important this concept is and thus that is why most people do not succeed in dancing.

The most important aspect about protein is that it must be taken well in advance of a practice session or a competition.

Top ballerinas are known to drink protein shakes in the morning or some sort of protein liquid or food before practice.

You can understand why this helps them to be so strong and fit.

These foods are the best because not only do they have high amount of fiber but they are also very easy to pack in your lunch box when you  go to practice or competition.

Water

Our bodies are made up of more than 60{14175b1f95d0f0faa387c4f6ed17908f179b141bfe6cf26d34224cd7cbf4f8b7} water so it goes without saying why it is vital for you to drink as much water as possible.

Ballerinas are also known to drink high amount of water in the morning.

This of course is what helps them keep hydrated throughout the practice session.

This is important considering how much water we lose as dancers when we perform.

Water also has the following benefits:

  • helps keep your breathe fresh
  • keeps you hydrated
  • keeps your fuller for longer.
  • Chases away headaches

Potassium

the dancer diet plan will not exist without me mentioning the importance of potassium.

In fact this nutrient is what I take the most caution in because if not taken it can have huge ramifications.

The following foods contain high amount of protein:

  • Banana
  • Mushrooms
  • Cucumbers

Sleeping

Yes sleeping should also be an important factor for a dancer diet plan because of the fact that all these nutrients would not do anything without you incorporating sleep.

This is because sleep is what makes all the above nutrients work in the body.

I would recommend 5-7 hours, of course this could depend on your body.

With sleeping just makes sure you do not over do it as this may make feel very tired which can jeopardize your progress.

Important times to eat

The other important factor about the dancers diet is the time you consume all these nutrients.

This will be helpful because as dancers we need to have the best amount of energy at the right time so we can reach our full potential.

Let me talk about the most optimal times for incorporating all the above factors.

Breakfast

This is a very important eating time and I have to say that I use to neglect its importance.

It is more important for athletes than normal people because of the energy you leave on the floor.

Remember when you go to practice you literally are taking away energy and protein from your muscles.

So it would not be wise to not repair the damaged muscles.

Having said that it is vital to remember that you must not eat something heavy just for the sake of being full. Just keep it light and simple.

The other bad thing about eating a lot is that you may end up being constipated because you will be shaking your body drastically after a few minutes you ate.

If you do happen to eat a lot it is better to leave a long gap (2 hours or more) before your par-take in your sport.

Remember to keep this in mind if you will be doing a dance workout just before practice too.

Lunch

This part is not too crucial when compared to breakfast and supper because during the day you may still function well especially if you ate your breakfast well.

What most dancers and ballerinas do is that they snack during lunch most of the time which helps them to get more power for continuing the session.

Dinner

I could say that dinner is a bitter similar to breakfast.

remember the only difference is that your muscles have been destroyed so you need to replace them with good foods.

The food can be like breakfast but only being a little bit heavier than breakfast.

Examples could be foods like turkey, chicken, lean meat with brown rice or salad.

Remember to not eat immediately before you sleep as this may effect your digestion (similar to breakfast remember).

Remember to always leave at least 2 hours before you sleep and eat dinner.
